Window Frames

Our window frame materials include wood, stone and metal, making them suitable for both traditional and contemporary properties. Each frame material has its own characteristics and requires a considered approach. Wooden frames offer natural warmth and traditional character, stone surrounds are commonly found in historic and period architecture, while metal frames provide distinctive, slim profiles often associated with heritage, industrial and architectural properties. By carefully considering the existing frame material, condition and construction, the glazing can be specified and fitted appropriately, helping to preserve the original appearance of the window while improving thermal performance, comfort and energy efficiency.

Stone

Stone mullioned windows often found in period or listed buildings are an ancient skill of framing a window opening. Three most common stones used are Bath, Portland and Ham Stone. Stone mullioned windows do stand the test of time but can and do suffer from age related issue. The most common things we see are rusting iron work or fixings screwed into the stone. These rust and expand over time cracking and forcing the stones apart. Condensation sitting on the lower part of the stone windows eventually causing black mould or saturating the stone in water which cracks during the winter months in cold temperatures. We are trained in repairing and replacing stone mullioned windows using traditional methods and techniques used for hundreds of years.

Metal

Metal window frames and casements are the most common form of openings we find in listed or period property’s.

We provide expert metal craftsmanship through our dedicated in-house workshop for restoring original metal window frames. Our facility can handle a vast quantity of frames simultaneously, ensuring efficiency in our metal window restoration services.

We specialise in the onsite removal of metal frames, which are then transported back to our workshops in Dorset. Here, we carry out the restoration of metal frames by individually shot blasting them back to sound metal.

Repairs are performed by our skilled metal smiths, and each frame is coated in a Zinc rich primer before being finished in any RAL colour in our paint ovens. This meticulous process guarantees low to no maintenance.

Finally, we return to refit each restored metal window to its rightful place using traditional materials and techniques.

Most commonly found issues are over painting causing hinges and handles to snap or become tight. Rusting metal effecting the glazing causing glass to crack or become loose. Draughty or poor fitting causing cold draughts during the winter months.

We always recommend restoring existing metal casements over replacements, however, we do make new metal casements which are often used in new extensions and can closely mimic what is originally installed.

Wood

Wooden framed windows and casements have been used in houses for hundreds of years. We have vast knowledge in repairing existing wooden frames and reproducing new.  Timber window frames are very economical and environmentally friendly due to there life span of use and end of life recycle ability means they will continue to be used in the future.

Most common issues we see are over painting of casements meaning they are hard to open and close. Condensation during the winter which sits on the bottom part of any casement eventually rotting or damaging the timber frame.

We have the skills and man power to overhaul existing timber casements, often easing and adjusting wooden casements, replacing worn out hinges and window furniture giving your timber windows a new lease of life.
